About us

OUR COMPANY

Macay is an industry leader. We are the first to develop quality-control equipment and to implement new technologies to ensure the highest quality to our buyers. Our process is one of a kind: we unroll round bales, dry them and reform them into square bales. Coupled with the use of two innovative moisture-sensing technologies, this process puts us ahead of our competitors.

THE PEACE RIVER REGION

The Peace River farming region is surrounded by a natural forest barrier and is also one of the newest farming areas in the world. These factors combine to allow for more natural growing conditions that require less chemical fertilizer and herbicide use. Since our Timothy is grown with less fertilizer, our hay is low in nitrate and potassium, which makes it a safe diet for milking cows. All-natural Timothy is processed with the highest standards of quality and safety.

CLIMATE

The climate is ideally suited for grasses like Timothy. Peace River’s unique combination of cool days and long daylight hours is what gives the hay its high-sugar content.

GROWING ATTRIBUTES

We certify that our products:
• contain low levels of chemical fertilizers and herbicides;
• contain no pesticides;
• are free of prohibited chemicals (clopyralid and bromoxynil).

The farm

In 1953, the Lavoie family sealed a 160 acre homestead in Northern Alberta. The family worked together to clear the land and build a new farm. Today, the Lavoie family farm is home to 400 dairy cows and multiple grain & hay operations that extend over 20,000 acres.

Developing new machinery

Establishing a farm in Northern Alberta requires dedication and innovation. In 1995, while already working for a hay exporter, Evans Lavoie knew that a new method had to be developed to ensure a consistent supply of high grade Timothy grade to export. The Lavoies have developed special machinery and new quality control processes that no other companies use.
